Roy Brandstater: My Early Years in Collinsvale and Avondale

Grandfather’s Present

When Grandfather retired from the hill country and went down to live at Glenorchy nearer to Hobart and close to the River Derwent, Gordon and I liked to go down and spend a day with them, and of course on the beach of the river. As a surprise gift to Gordon and me Grandfather built a very special hand cart. It was professionally constructed and painted. The wheels were small sulky-type wheels, and a single shaft coming from the middle of the underside of the body provided the means of traction. It had a crossbar at the end so that two boys could handle it comfortably. It was a real show piece for the other boys around. No more did we have to carry loads on our backs from the village store. Besides there was so much to be hauled around the farm, so this became the most utilitarian article on the place. But it had to be pulled by hand and this took grit and muscle. We did try a calf or two with little success.
