Roy Brandstater: My Early Years in Collinsvale and Avondale

German Emigrants

According to the records in the Tasmania State Archives, Hobart, our Brandstater family of six joined a ship load of emigrants in Hamburg, Germany and sailed away from their native land on October 20, 1871. It was the four-masted barque, “Eugenie” with its full complement of sail and sailors which, after 156 days at sea, sailed up the Derwent River and tied up at the Hobart docks with Mt. Wellington frowning in the background. With what excitement the passengers crowded the rails to look out on their new homeland! With what relief they steadied themselves down the gangplank with their precious, humble luggage! After four and a half months at sea, confined in a nineteenth century sailing ship, with ship’s discipline, ship’s program, ship’s rations, and subject to unpredictable weather and wind, and frightening storms, their heartfelt consensus cry was: “ENDLICH SIND WIR HIER!”….. “At last we’re here!” It was March 24, 1872.
